VAR Versus MSP And How They Are Assimilating

In the highly complex world of information technology, trying to decipher and understand acronyms, let alone their meanings, can be aggravating if you aren’t heavily entrenched in the tech space. What is a VAR?

A Value-Added Reseller, or VAR, is a third-party reseller of software and hardware that typically adds additional features, products and features to upgrade its package value. 

For example, ITC Communications offers many software programs (ex: Microsoft Office 365) and provides them to clients in a bundle, including support and the latest installs as they become available.

A VAR also serves as a singular point of contact between various product/solution providers and acts as an IT expert.

 

What is an MSP?

A Managed Service Provider (MSP) manages technical support for their clients. This can include your company’s entire IT infrastructure or just pieces of your IT network.

Differences Between VARs and MSPs

While similar in ways, the main difference between VARs and MSPs is their interaction with the end user, aka you. VARS traditionally charge on a short-term basis and only covers certain systems that the end user pays for. On the other hand, MSPs are more long-term focused, with open-ended client relationships that encompass a wide range of services.  

Another key variation between the two service models is their client base. VARS tend to cater to larger organizations and companies and provide more specialized products/services. MSPs often market to the smaller business clientele, as smaller companies often have less resources, employees or IT expertise within their walls. MSPs let smaller entities outsource their IT services so they can compete on a larger scale.

 

Integration of the Two

As the IT industry has evolved from the license model into a SaaS (software as a service) platform, VARs have had to adapt to stay in demand. One way to accomplish this has been to bridge the gap between VARs and MSPs, thus integrating the two.
